This recipe is inspired by the traditional Neapolitan style pizza sauce.
Pizza Sauce Ingredients:
- 400 grams (14.1 ounces) canned DOP San Marzano tomatoes
- Fresh basil leaf
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
Pizza Sauce Instructions
There are several ways to prepare the tomato sauce and it might all depend on the equipment you have available at home. For convenience, we use an immersion blender but below are the three different methods you may use.

Option 1 – Hand Crushed
Pour the can of DOP San Marzano tomatoes into a large or medium mixing bowl. Using your hands, lightly crush the tomatoes to form a coarse puree. The tomatoes don’t have to be completely crushed. They just must be good enough to form a sauce-like consistency for pizza. Really, no need to aim for perfection here.
Option 2 – Immersion Blender
In the same can the tomatoes are in, use an immersion blender and very lightly pulse a few times to just crush the large tomato chunks. Using an immersion blender, you must be careful not to over blend resulting in a very watery consistency. On the contrary, in this case, it is best to under blend. 2 or 3 good pulses will be enough.
Option 3 – Food Mill
The last and one of the best options is to use a food mill to create a uniform crushed tomato consistency. Using a mixing bowl, and a food mill process the can of tomato through the mill in the coarse grinding disc.
Adding the Condiments
After you process the San Marzano Tomatoes using your desired method from the above options it’s time to add the finishing touches. Add salt, olive oil, and basil leaf. Then stir until incorporated using a regular spoon.

Now that the sauce is ready, use it immediately, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
To use the sauce on a pizza, spread it over the surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Top with your choice of cheese and toppings and bake the pizza according to your recipe’s instructions.
This recipe works well with our easy dough recipe.
